Best Beaches in Cape Cod For Families – Welcome to the Cape Cod Family Photographer’s blog! My name is Alex, and as a year-round photographer on the Cape, I’ve explored every hidden cove and sandy stretch this peninsula has to offer. Whether you’re planning a multi-generational family reunion or a coastal wedding, choosing the right shoreline is the most important decision for your gallery.

Cape Cod features over 500 miles of coastline, each with a distinct personality. To help you navigate your options, I’ve compiled this ultimate guide to the 35+ best beaches on Cape Cod for families. I’ve divided them by region—Outer, Mid, Lower, and Upper Cape—to help you find the perfect backdrop for your memories. Before you schedule your session, I recommend checking tide charts.

The Wild Outer Cape: Drama and Dunes

The Outer Cape is defined by the Cape Cod National Seashore. Here, you’ll find massive cliffs, powerful surf, and a sense of untamed nature that is perfect for “epic” photography sessions.

  1. Coast Guard Beach (Eastham): Frequently ranked among the top beaches in the U.S., it offers massive dunes and a wide shoreline. Alex’s Tip: The light here at sunrise is unparalleled for romantic wedding portraits.
  2. Nauset Light Beach (Eastham): Home to the most famous lighthouse on the Cape. The red and white tower provides a striking vertical element to family photos.
  3. Marconi Beach (Wellfleet): Known for its steep, rugged sand cliffs. It’s a favorite for high-contrast, artistic black-and-white photography.
  4. Race Point Beach (Provincetown): Because of its position at the tip of the Cape, the sun stays “up” longer here, providing a beautiful extended golden hour.
  5. Herring Cove Beach (Provincetown): One of the few places on the East Coast where you can actually watch the sun set over the ocean water.
  6. Cahoon Hollow Beach (Wellfleet): Iconic for the “Wellfleet Slump” dunes and the energetic atmosphere near the Beachcomber.
  7. Mayo Beach (Wellfleet): A calmer, harbor-side option where the water is still—perfect for families with very small children who want to avoid big waves.

The Accessible Mid-Cape: Classic Coastal Charm

The Mid-Cape offers the classic “New England Summer” vibe. These beaches are generally easier to access and offer a variety of textures from beach huts to long jetties.

  1. Craigville Beach (Centerville): A massive beach with plenty of room to spread out. It’s the quintessential spot for large extended family groups.
  2. Kalmus Beach (Hyannis): A windsurfing hub. The colorful sails in the distance add a unique, kinetic energy to the background of your photos.
  3. Sea Street Beach (Hyannis): Features a charming boardwalk and stone jetties that provide excellent “levels” for posing families.
  4. West Dennis Beach (Dennis): This beach is over a mile long, making it easy to find a private spot even in the height of August.
  5. Chapin Memorial Beach (Dennis): My top pick for “low tide” photography. When the tide goes out, the reflections on the wet sand are like a mirror.

The Picturesque Lower Cape: Historic & Serene

The Lower Cape (the “elbow”) is home to some of the most affluent and historically preserved shorelines, including the famous Chatham lighthouses.

  1. Nauset Beach (Orleans): Wide-open vistas and great surf. Note: This is different from Nauset Light—it’s much larger and more expansive.
  2. Skaket Beach (Orleans): The “sunset king” of the bayside. The water stays shallow for miles, allowing us to take photos “walking on water.”
  3. Chatham Lighthouse Beach (Chatham): There is no backdrop more iconic for a Newport or Cape Cod wedding photographer than the Chatham Light.
  4. Harding’s Beach (Chatham): Features two lighthouses in the distance and beautiful, soft beach grass paths leading to the water.
  5. Ridgevale Beach (Chatham): Famous for its footbridges over the creek—perfect for “walking” shots of children and couples.

The Calm Upper Cape: Warm Water & Hidden Jems

The Upper Cape is closest to the bridge and often features the warmest water and most unique architectural elements like the Sandwich Boardwalk.

  1. Old Silver Beach (Falmouth): Known for having the clearest water on Cape Cod. It feels almost tropical during the day.
  2. Menauhant Beach (Falmouth): Offers a rocky shoreline that adds a rugged New England texture to your portraits.
  3. Sandy Neck Beach (Barnstable): A massive park with 6 miles of trails. Ideal for families who want a “nature hike” feel to their session.
  4. Surf Drive Beach (Falmouth): From here, we can capture the Nobska Lighthouse and the Vineyard ferries in the background.
  5. South Cape Beach (Mashpee): This is a state park beach that feels very secluded and “wild” without the drive to the Outer Cape.
  6. Monument Beach (Bourne): A great spot to see the sunset over the Cape Cod Canal.
  7. Falmouth Heights Beach: Offers a unique elevated view where we can photograph from the grass down toward the sand.
  8. Wood Neck Beach (Falmouth): One of my personal favorites for families because of the tidal pools and stone walls.
  9. Mashpee Town Beach: Very quiet and serene—perfect for intimate elopements or maternity sessions.
  10. Scusset Beach (Bourne): Located right at the canal, providing a mix of sandy beach and industrial pier textures.
  11. Gray’s Beach (Yarmouth): The Bass Hole boardwalk is the most photographed boardwalk on the Cape for a reason—it’s stunning.
  12. Seagull Beach (West Yarmouth): A massive parking area makes this one of the most convenient spots for large groups.
  13. West Falmouth Harbor Beach: A small, quiet harbor beach with beautiful boat views.
  14. Long Beach (Centerville): A peaceful alternative to the busier Hyannis-area beaches.
  15. Covell’s Beach (Centerville): Beautiful dunes and much quieter than its neighbor, Craigville.
  16. Corporation Beach (Dennis): A curved “bowl” shaped beach that is very protected from the wind.
  17. Paine’s Creek Beach (Brewster): The best “low tide” spot in the Lower Cape. The winding creek adds incredible depth to photos.
  18. Smuggler’s Beach (South Yarmouth): Features a large stone jetty that is perfect for silhouette shots at sunset.
  19. Sandwich Boardwalk Beach: The 1,350-foot boardwalk is a landmark every visitor should see.

Planning Your Cape Cod Beach Session: FAQ

What is the best time for a photoshoot?
I always recommend “Golden Hour”—the hour before sunset. On the Bay side (North), this gives us a direct sunset. On the Ocean side (East), it gives us soft, pink-hued light.

Do we need permits or parking passes?
Yes, most town beaches require a sticker before 4:00 or 5:00 PM. I usually schedule sessions after the booths close to avoid fees and large crowds.

What should we wear?
Stick to neutrals, blues, and whites. Avoid neons or heavy patterns that compete with the natural beauty of the beach. Check out my full guide on what to wear for your session.
